Montana Thespians is dedicated to advancing theatre education statewide by supporting teachers, recognizing student achievement, and fostering a thriving community of artists. Through our annual Festival, Thespys, leadership opportunities, and resources, we celebrate excellence in theatre while equipping educators and students with the tools they need to succeed. As part of the Educational Theatre Association, we believe that theatre has the power to inspire, connect, and transform lives across Montana.

FAQs

  • A “Thespian” is a student inducted into the International Thespian Society (ITS), the theatre honor society for middle and high school students. The name comes from Thespis, the first actor in ancient Greece.

    • Junior Thespians are inducted at the middle school level.

    • Thespians are inducted in high school and carry that title as a mark of achievement in theatre arts.

Students earn induction based on their dedication, skill, and accomplishments in theatre.

  • The Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) is the national organization that supports theatre education and manages the International Thespian Society (ITS). Membership connects schools to a nationwide community of theatre educators and students, along with resources, training, and recognition programs.

To become members, schools charter a Thespian troupe through EdTA. Once a troupe is established, students can be inducted as Thespians (high school) or Junior Thespians (middle school), gaining access to honors, scholarships, and events such as the International Thespian Festival.

  • For teachers, starting a Thespian troupe connects your program to a statewide and national network of theatre educators. You’ll gain access to professional development, conferences, and advocacy resources, plus recognition opportunities for both you and your students. Troupes also benefit from practical supports like risk management coverage for Thespian events, subscriptions to Dramatics and Teaching Theatre journals, and even potential royalty discounts on productions.

  • For students, Thespian induction is more than an honor—it’s an opportunity. Membership opens doors to leadership roles at the state and national levels, exclusive auditions and scholarships, and the chance to showcase their work at festivals and the Thespys®. Inducted students also receive an official certificate, pin, and membership card, marking a lifelong title. Once you become a Thespian, you’re part of a very special community of theatre artists and educators that extends far beyond high school.

  • No! You don’t have to be a Thespian or Junior Thespian to attend. Any school theatre program in Montana is welcome, whether or not they have an official Thespian troupe. Schools can participate in workshops, watch performances, and enjoy the community. Only active Thespian troupes are eligible for certain opportunities, such as competing in Chapter Select.

  • The Festival is a two-day statewide gathering of students and teachers who come together to perform, take workshops, compete in events, and celebrate theatre. It’s both an educational experience and a chance to connect with other theatre programs across Montana.

  • Festival performances and workshops are for registered students, teachers, and guests. It is not a public event, but registered attendees may bring approved chaperones and volunteers. Sponsors or vendors who partner with Montana Thespians are also welcome on-site in designated areas.
